over the last year most of us witnessed standards being raised (and at times ignored) at events with “free alcohol”. since they are frequent and heavily attended, it’s not really a surprise that sometimes they can attract the wrong attention ( evidence a / evidence b ).
there is no risk of the free fun ending into 2010 (psst sxsw around the corner)..but i think the below advice will help keep the fun level at its momentum…
- if you go to these events, TIP
- this is particularly important if the event is hosted at a local music venue/bar. not only does god hate it when you don’t tip, but the bartender does too. you’ll be under poured after being served last in the future.
- most importantly, don’t forget that bars that have bartenders unable to pay their bills won’t have bartenders to serve you free alcohol in the future….we all lose
- if you host or promote, avoid use of the word “free alcohol” when promoting way in advance:
- we are already seeing this…softer words like “complimentary” are apparently less threatening and liable while last minute “surprise” announcements seem to be bringing the right type and size of crowd.
- if you host a free/complimentary event, provide the details
- know up front that you’re doing “drink tickets”? tell people. since
i can’t be trusted drinking with a credit card many of us withdraw an allowance for cab/food/booze/tips before heading out, expectations set up front are always nice. unexpected 3.95$ atm charge is not nice.
- if you are doing drinks for a limited time frame, tell people in advance
